Cleaned the DPF, forced a regen, maybe even replaced the filter — and the warning light came back anyway? That is not bad luck. A diesel particulate filter almost never blocks on its own: something upstream is making more soot than the filter can burn off, or keeps interrupting the burn-off itself. Here is how to stop your DPF blocking again — and what to check if it already has.
Your DPF traps exhaust soot, then burns it off during regeneration — passively on a long drive, or actively when the engine deliberately raises exhaust temperature. When regeneration keeps failing, soot builds faster than it burns. Economy drops, the DPF light appears, and eventually the car protects itself with limp mode.
If your DPF re-blocked within months of a clean, one of these is almost always behind it:
This is exactly why our mobile DPF cleaning in Melbourne starts with diagnosis, not chemicals. If the cause is not found and fixed, the cleanest filter in Melbourne will simply block again.
Once a week, drive 20–30 minutes at highway speed. Sustained revs and exhaust temperature let a full regeneration complete — something a school run or supermarket trip can never do.
Tell-tale signs a regen is running: slightly higher idle, cooling fans staying on after you park, a hot metallic smell, or a sudden dip in fuel economy. If you notice them, keep driving for another ten minutes rather than shutting down in the driveway.
Diesels with a DPF need the oil grade the handbook specifies — usually an ACEA C2/C3 low-SAPS oil. Anything else slowly fills the filter with incombustible ash.
A failing pressure sensor, lazy glow plugs or a sticking EGR valve all skew when and how well regens run. A $200 sensor left alone can destroy a $4,000 filter — if a warning light is on, get the codes read early.
If the car only ever does short, cold trips, soot wins. Combine errands into one longer drive, or take the freeway option once in a while — the DPF will thank you.
Quality fuel helps injectors spray cleanly and burn less sooty. And if someone suggests a DPF delete instead: removal is illegal in Australia, fails roadworthy, and attracts serious EPA fines. Every clean we do is on-car, with nothing removed and nothing bypassed — 100% legal.
A clean filter is a fresh start, not a cure. Whatever overloaded it — sensor, EGR, intake carbon, injectors, driving pattern — has to be identified, or you will be back where you started within months.
| Cause | What it does to the DPF | The real fix |
|---|---|---|
| Short trips only | Regens start but never finish; soot stacks up | Weekly 20–30 minute highway run |
| Faulty differential-pressure sensor | Regens run too late, too often, or not at all | Test against live data and replace |
| Sticking EGR / soot-caked intake | Poor airflow means far more soot per kilometre | On-site EGR and intake manifold clean |
| Worn injectors or tired turbo | Over-fuelling and black smoke overload the filter | Diagnose with live data, then repair |
| Wrong (high-ash) engine oil | Permanent ash build-up no regen can burn | Switch to the specified low-SAPS oil |
| Interrupted regenerations | Half-burnt soot packs dense and hard | Let regens finish; fix what interrupts them |
If the DPF light is already on, the car is regenerating every few hundred kilometres, or it has dropped into limp mode, the soot load has passed the point driving habits can fix. Forcing regen after regen at that stage just bakes the problem in.
That is where we come in. CarbonTech comes to your home or workplace anywhere across Melbourne — plus Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and the Mornington Peninsula — reads the fault codes and live sensor data to find why the filter blocked, then cleans the DPF on the car. Nothing is removed, everything stays legal, and the result is verified with before-and-after readings. Mobile DPF cleaning starts from $800 — see our DPF cleaning cost guide for exact pricing — and it is backed by a simple promise: the clean works, or you don’t pay.
A properly cleaned DPF with the root cause fixed should give you tens of thousands of trouble-free kilometres. If yours keeps blocking, stop treating the symptom. Book a mobile DPF clean or call 0483 926 061 — we will find what is really filling it with soot, and fix that too.
